Historic monuments in Cairo

When people think of Egyptian monuments, the Pyramids of Giza often come to mind, yet there are many monuments within the city itself which are worth exploring. Here’s a list of remarkable monuments to see before venturing further afield.

Coptic Cairo

Coptic Cairo refers to the twisty lanes which are filled with churches, mosques and synagogues. The Coptic Museum contains a large wealth of information on the early Christian period of Egypt as well as being home to extravagant collections of Copic art. The Hanging Church which was built in the 4th century can be found next door and contains some spectacular examples of Copic architecture. The Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus, the Ben Ezra Synagogue and the Mosque of Amr Ibn al-As are all extremely popular with tourists who visit this district, where there is an abundance of historical fact and legend.

The Citadel

The original structure laid out by Saladin in 1176 has disappeared apart from the eastern outer walls, yet a legacy of rulers have created their own magnificent additions here. The Mosque of Muhammed Ali is the most well-known monument on the site due to its white stone and tall, slender minarets. Gawhara Terrace is the other big reason why people visit the site as the views across the city are the best in town.

Manyal Place

Manyal Palace is a gorgeously ornate building which is at the northerly end of Roda Island. For several years, extensive restoration has taken place and it has re-opened to the public, showcasing eccentric styles of both Arabic and European designs which results in a lavish symphony of styles. The Residential Palace has Ottoman-style tile work, Rococo flourishes and oil paintings, yet the Throne Palace is the real highlight though, as the place is adorned in gold. The lush green gardens that surround the palace gives it that extra exotic feel.
