There are many ways to see a total solar eclipse. You can stand in a field with a camping chair, or you can spend the week beforehand drifting down the most storied river on Earth, temples on either bank, and let the Moon’s shadow find you at the climax of a journey through five thousand years of history. The 2027 eclipse offers the second kind, and it may be the finest setting any eclipse has ever had.
Why a Nile cruise suits an eclipse
An eclipse is a moment. A cruise is a story, and the 2027 path of totality crosses Egypt precisely where the story is richest, near Luxor, ancient Thebes. Spend the days before the eclipse among the Valley of the Kings, Karnak, Kom Ombo and Philae with an expert Egyptologist, and 2 August stops being an isolated spectacle: it becomes the crescendo of a fortnight steeped in the ancient world, in the one stretch of the entire path where totality approaches six and a half minutes.
In the footsteps of Agatha Christie
Our guests spend that week aboard the MS Royal Princess, a traditional five star cruiser styled on the golden age of travel, in the footsteps of Agatha Christie. Authentic Italian-inspired interiors, a sweeping grand staircase, a sun deck and pool for the hours between temples: it is the Nile as travellers a century ago knew it, with the comforts they could only have imagined. The boat holds an Intertek Cristal certificate of achievement for food hygiene, and the cruise is full board with 11 guided excursions included.
Eclipse day, 2 August 2027
The day is built entirely around totality. After a week on the river, guests experience the eclipse in the Luxor area, close to the point of greatest eclipse. From late morning the Moon begins its slow bite into the Sun; shortly after one o’clock in the afternoon, expected between approximately 13:02 and 13:08 local time, daylight gives way to darkness, the corona blazes around the black disc of the Moon, and planets appear in the afternoon sky.
Every guest receives full eclipse information and safety guidance before departure, and the day’s complete schedule is confirmed to all guests ahead of travel. A solar eclipse is a natural event and no view can ever be guaranteed, but Upper Egypt’s famously clear August skies are among the most dependable anywhere on the eclipse path.
After totality: the Red Sea
When the last partial phase ends, the journey softens. Guests travel by road to the Red Sea for four nights, all inclusive, in a Standard Sea View or Standard Partial Sea View Room. After Cairo’s monuments, a week of temples and the drama of totality, the reef and the pool are exactly what the itinerary calls for.
