Expect fresh juices, eggs cooked to order and a spread that runs from Egyptian staples to international favourites. In the evening, half board dinner is also served in The Restaurant, from a menu prepared for half board guests rather than the full carte.

Two tropical-style pools anchor the gardens between the rooms and the beach, and both are heated through the winter months, so a February swim is genuinely pleasant. The main pool is the centrepiece, ringed by palms, cabanas and daybeds, while a second, smaller pool nearby tends to stay quieter. Both are open from 8am until sunset.

Service comes from The Beach House, which sends juices, cocktails and light bites to the loungers at both pools as well as the beach. The atmosphere is deliberately low-key: no loudspeakers, no poolside games, just attentive service, shade when you want it and the sea glittering below. With only 82 rooms behind them, the pools rarely feel busy even in peak season.

Winter is when the heating earns its keep. The private beach fills a sheltered natural cove of around 250 metres, soft sand backed by palms and terracotta parasols, with loungers, daybeds and cabanas served all day by The Beach House. Protected by El Gouna’s lagoons, the water is calm and gently shelving, easy swimming for most of the year.

Beach kit is generous and free: snorkelling gear, sea shoes, life vests, volleyball, bocce and board games are all provided. Stand-up paddleboards and kayaks can be hired by the hour, and the concierge arranges parasailing and boat days along the coast.

Snorkelling, diving and kitesurfing

Straight off the beach you are on sand rather than coral, so serious snorkellers should take a boat trip: the reefs and islands offshore from El Gouna are superb and easily reached. Dive centres in town run everything from taster dives to full certification, and El Gouna ranks among the best kitesurfing destinations in the world, with steady winds and shallow, flat water at Zeytouna and Mangroovy beaches a short ride away. Purpose-built and impeccably kept, El Gouna is unlike anywhere else on Egypt’s Red Sea: ten kilometres of coastline laced with turquoise lagoons and some twenty small islands, joined by little bridges, tuk-tuks and water taxis. The feel is closer to a Mediterranean harbour town than a resort strip, with a safe, strollable atmosphere, a genuine dining scene and championship golf.

Where The Chedi El Gouna sits

The hotel occupies its own hillside cove on the sea side of town, close to downtown El Gouna. That means privacy and open sea views without isolation: tuk-tuks reach the shops and cafes of downtown in around ten minutes, with the waterfront restaurants of Abu Tig Marina soon after. Hurghada International Airport is around 26 kilometres away, and we arrange transfers so you are met on arrival and driven straight to the door.
