Position is the headline. The hotel stands directly on the East Bank of the Nile on Khaled Ibn El Walid Street, the boulevard of Luxor’s hotel quarter, with its own boat dock on the water and the Theban mountains filling the view across the river. Luxor Temple is a level riverside walk of around 20 minutes, Karnak a short drive, and the Valley of the Kings waits over the water on the West Bank. Few five star hotels anywhere put this much of ancient Egypt within such easy reach.
The building itself is a purpose built five star that opened in 2002, its 303 rooms and suites arranged over eight floors around inner courtyards and river facing terraces. Under one roof you get four restaurants running from Nubian buffets to Lebanese, Italian and Thai cooking, a heated outdoor pool in the gardens beside the Nile, and the Wellbeing Spa with its Turkish hammam. Breakfast in The Nubian restaurant is, our customers tell us, among the best they have eaten in Egypt, and evenings finish well at the Nile Bar with a cold drink as the feluccas glide home. Half board adds dinner in The Nubian, an evening buffet whose theme changes through the week. Drinks with dinner are payable locally, the hotel is fully licensed, and the à la carte restaurants below are open to all guests for a separate charge, so half board guests can happily swap a buffet night for Lebanese or Thai.

Between meals, the pattern most of our customers settle into is a light lunch by the pool, tea or a pastry at Café des Délices in the late afternoon, and a slow decision about which restaurant gets the evening. In the winter high season the à la carte venues fill up, so book your tables with reception on your first day rather than on the night.
The outdoor pool sits in the gardens between the hotel and its Nile frontage, wrapped in lounger terraces and served by the Tropicana snack bar. Crucially for Luxor, it is heated: winter is the classic season here, with sunny days of around 23 to 26°C from November to March, and heating is the difference between admiring a pool and actually swimming in it. A separate small children’s pool sits alongside.
After a morning scrambling through tombs, the Wellbeing Spa and Wellness Center earns its keep. It opens daily from 9am to 8pm, and treatments run from massages to wraps and aromatherapy.
For anyone who cannot leave the clubs at home, an 18 hole golf course lies around 8 km from the hotel.
The rhythm that works best here is the one the locals have always kept: temples and tombs in the cool of the early morning, then back to the hotel for lunch, a swim and a couple of unhurried hours on a lounger while the heat peaks. By four the light softens, the mountains across the river turn amber, and you can head out again for Luxor Temple at dusk or simply stay put with a book and a fresh juice from Tropicana. Sightseeing holidays are tiring; this hotel is unusually good at the recovery half of the day.
