The Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx are about 45 minutes by road, and the Grand Egyptian Museum, the vast new home of the Tutankhamun treasures, is 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. With an extra half day you can push on to Saqqara, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser predates Giza itself, and to the open air museum at Memphis, Egypt’s ancient capital.

Islamic and Coptic Cairo

Khan el-Khalili, the great medieval bazaar, is around 20 minutes away, best wandered with a guide who knows which alleys hold the silversmiths and which the spice merchants. The Citadel of Saladin and the mosques of Islamic Cairo sit roughly half an hour from the hotel, and the churches of the old Coptic quarter make a quieter half day.

The Nile itself
