Sunrise Tucana Resort Makadi Bay does the Red Sea differently: whitewashed arches, rattan lanterns and macramé that feel closer to a Mexican hacienda or a Tulum beach house than a conventional Egyptian resort, set on a private beach along one of this coast’s calmest bays.
Opened in late 2021 as a flagship of Sunrise’s premium Grand Select tier, the resort was designed for people who find the standard mega-resort formula a little tiring. There are 240 rooms and suites rather than a thousand, gardens threaded between low whitewashed buildings rather than concrete concourses, and a dining concept that removes the buffet almost entirely: on all inclusive, breakfast, lunch and dinner are cooked to order and brought to your table in the Greek, Italian and international restaurants, with no limit on how often you dine in each.
The suite scene is a story in itself. More than a third of the resort is given over to suites, from swim-up terraces that step straight into the water to two-bedroom Executive Suites with private pools, and most suite categories carry membership of the Posh Club, a VIP tier that adds 24-hour butler service, a private lounge, limousine airport transfers and a sparkling wine welcome.
Evenings keep the same pitch. Expect live music and easy lounge sessions across the bars, themed nights at the Bedouin Village and a nightcap in the adults-only Cohiba Bar rather than megaphone-led razzmatazz, with a bar list long enough to find a different mood each night of the week.
Couples and honeymooners are the natural fit: jacuzzi terraces, an adults-only pool, a late cigar and cocktail bar and that photogenic design give it real romance. Food-led travellers do well here too, because table service three times a day is genuinely rare on this coast. Families are welcome, and the swim-up suites and two-bedroom Executive Suites give them proper space, but if you want a vast play-everything complex there are better fits nearby, and we will happily point you to them.
The spa and gym sit at the neighbouring sister Sunrise resort, a short stroll away, and buffet lovers should note there is only one buffet night a week. In exchange you get calm, style and cooked-to-order dining every day of your stay. In our view that is a very good trade, and it is why we rate this as one of the smartest stays on Makadi Bay.
