Twenty four floors of glass and stone rise straight from the Corniche El Nil, and from your private balcony the river performs all day: rowing crews cutting the water at dawn, feluccas leaning into the afternoon breeze, party boats trailing music beneath the lights of Zamalek after dark. This is the former Conrad Cairo, relaunched in January 2025 as Sofitel Cairo Downtown Nile, and it remains one of the finest river viewpoints in the capital.
The tower went up in the late 1990s and spent a quarter of a century as the Conrad, one of the best known addresses on the Cairo skyline. Accor took it over when the Hilton flag came down at the end of 2024, and the Sofitel treatment shows: calming Nile blues and natural wood through the bedrooms, statement lighting, marble bathrooms with separate tub and rain shower, and that unmistakable French polish at the front desk. It became the fourth Sofitel in Egypt, joining some serious company in the Winter Palace in Luxor and the Old Cataract in Aswan.
The location is the story here. You are on the downtown stretch of the Corniche at Boulaq, sharing the riverbank with the St Regis and the Nile City towers, directly opposite the green northern tip of Gezira Island. The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square is a half hour stroll along the water, or ten minutes in a taxi, and the riverside promenade starts more or less at the door. For the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Khan el-Khalili you simply add a driver, and none is much more than 40 minutes away.
First time visitors who want the classic sights within easy reach, museum lovers, couples adding two or three Cairo nights to a Nile cruise or a Red Sea week, and anyone who wants a proper five star cocoon, spa included, to retreat to after a day in the noise and colour of the city. With rooms sleeping up to three, and suites up to four, it works for families doing the Pyramids too.
This is a big, busy city centre tower on a working stretch of the Corniche, not a leafy resort. Come for the views, the location and the dining, ask us to request a high floor, and book a Nile view category, because that balcony panorama is the whole point. Every one of the 615 rooms and suites at Sofitel Cairo Downtown Nile has a private balcony, which is rarer in Cairo than you would think. Standard rooms are a generous 41 m² across the board, so the category you choose is really about the view and the extras, not the space. Decor is calm and contemporary: pale wood, river blues, minimalist artwork and marble bathrooms.
The entry point, with king or twin double bedding, a balcony over the city side of the tower, a business desk and a marble bathroom. Comfortable and quiet, but you are not here for rooftops when the Nile is on the other side of the building.
The same footprint turned to face the river, and the category we recommend as your starting point. Slide the door open in the morning and take your coffee on the balcony with the water traffic below and Zamalek across the channel.
Set higher in the tower, where the balcony view opens right along the river and out across the city to the desert haze. Sunset from up here, with the bridges lighting up one by one, is worth the modest step up on its own.

The outdoor pool sits in a landscaped setting beside the Nile, ringed by loungers and private cabanas with poolside service from the Pool Bar. The water is temperature controlled, so a swim is perfectly pleasant even in the cooler winter months when Cairo sightseeing is at its best. It is a genuinely restful spot in a city that rarely pauses: an hour here with a cold drink after a morning at the Pyramids resets you completely.

The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, home to one of the world’s great collections of pharaonic treasures, is about half an hour’s walk south along the Corniche, or ten minutes in a taxi. The riverside promenade outside the hotel is made for an early evening stroll, and a felucca sail on the Nile, which we can arrange, casts off from landings close by. Cross to Zamalek and you are among the galleries, bookshops and cafés of Cairo’s most village-like district.

The address is 1191 Corniche El Nil in Boulaq, the downtown stretch of Cairo’s river road, a couple of kilometres north of Tahrir Square. This is a confident, big-city setting rather than a quaint one: the St Regis and the Nile City towers are neighbours, ministries and banks fill the blocks behind, and across the water lies the leafy northern tip of Gezira Island and Zamalek. What it gives you is the Nile at your feet and every major sight within an easy drive.

The 24 storey tower at 1191 Corniche El Nil traded as the Conrad Cairo for over two decades, left Hilton at the end of December 2024 and relaunched under Accor as Sofitel Cairo Downtown Nile in January 2025. Every one of the 615 rooms and suites has a private balcony, but Classic rooms face the city side of the tower. To guarantee the river, book a Deluxe Nile View or above. Luxury rooms on the higher floors have the widest panoramas, and all suites face the Nile.

Yes, the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square is about a 30 minute walk south along the Corniche, or around 10 minutes by taxi. Bear in mind that the Tutankhamun collection is now displayed at the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Pyramids, so many of our customers visit both.
