The twin towers of the Sheraton Cairo Hotel & Casino have stood on the west bank of the Nile since 1971, when this became the first Sheraton in Africa, and a top to bottom renovation has brought the grand old landmark right up to date. The position is still the point: Galae Square in Dokki, one bridge from the Cairo Opera House, around ten minutes from the Egyptian Museum and roughly half an hour from the Pyramids of Giza.
Cairo rewards a well placed base more than almost any city we sell, and few addresses are better connected than this one. Step outside and the corniche runs along the river in front of you, feluccas drift beneath the bridge, and the Opera House grounds on Gezira island are a short walk over the water. Downtown and Tahrir Square sit just across the river, so the Egyptian Museum is about ten minutes away by car, while the Pyramids, Saqqara and the Grand Egyptian Museum are all within an easy morning’s reach on this side of the Nile.
The hotel reopened in 2017 after an extensive renovation that has since worked through both towers, so its 651 rooms and suites feel contemporary rather than nostalgic. In our view the dining line up is the strongest in this part of the city: a Nile facing breakfast restaurant, serious Japanese and Italian tables, an Egyptian terrace with live music at the weekend, and Botanica 25, a rooftop lounge on the 25th floor with sweeping views over the river. Add the outdoor pool, the spa, a 24 hour gym and the 24 hour casino that gives the hotel its name, and there is plenty to come back to after a day among the monuments.

Every room in both towers has been renovated, with warm contemporary interiors, king or twin bedding, a flat screen TV, minibar, safe, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and 24 hour room service. There are 651 rooms and suites in all, including 105 suites, and the choice really comes down to view and floor: city side rooms look over Dokki’s rooftops towards Giza, while Nile side rooms face the river, Gezira island and the downtown skyline, a view that is properly special after dark.
The entry level room is a generous size for a city hotel, with a king or two beds and large windows on the city side. Comfortable, calm on the upper floors and all you need for a sightseeing base.

Set high in the South Tower with Nile outlooks and access to the Sheraton Club Lounge on the 26th floor, said to be one of the largest in the region, with a dedicated lift, breakfast with a view, afternoon tea and evening refreshments on its panoramic terrace.
A corner position gives these suites light on two sides and a proper sitting area alongside the bedroom, a sensible step up for longer Cairo stays.

We sell the Sheraton Cairo Hotel on a bed and breakfast basis. Breakfast is a generous buffet with Egyptian and international choices, fresh bakery and eggs cooked to order, served in Rawi with the Nile filling the windows; Club guests can take theirs up in the 26th floor lounge instead. Lunch and dinner are payable locally, and with five restaurants plus bars and cafes on site you could eat differently every night without leaving the building.

At the top of the North Tower, a botanical themed lounge with panoramic views over the Nile and the city, serving afternoon tea from 3pm, early evening dining and cocktails until midnight, often with live singers.
The outdoor pool sits on a sun terrace with loungers around it and the Le Mirage pool bar alongside for cold drinks and snacks, so it is easy to lose an afternoon here after a hot morning at the Pyramids. Cairo is sunny virtually all year; the pool is at its best from spring to autumn, while in midwinter many guests treat the terrace as a suntrap rather than a swimming stop.
The spa offers massages, facials and aromatherapy treatments, with a sauna, steam room and whirlpool for unwinding afterwards, and there is a beauty salon on site. The fitness centre is open 24 hours for hotel guests, with treadmills, bikes, stair climbers and weights, and personal trainers on hand if you want direction.
