Rooms and suites here were rebuilt around light: pale contemporary schemes, plenty of glass and, in most categories, a balcony, French balcony or terrace angled at the sea. Every room comes with a 49 inch TV, complimentary WiFi, minibar, tea and coffee making facilities, air conditioning and a smart bathroom, most with both a walk in shower and a bathtub.

Almost all of our customers take Hilton Hurghada Plaza all inclusive, and it is a proper package rather than a token one. Buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at Rostrata, with live cooking stations and a different theme each evening. Between meals there are snacks through the day, while local beers, wines, spirits and cocktails, plus soft drinks, juices, tea and coffee, are poured from morning until around 11pm.

The à la carte restaurants are part of the deal too. Each seven night stay includes one à la carte dinner, chosen from Lophelia Seafood, Turkuaz or Wok and reserved a day or so ahead with guest relations. Further à la carte visits, imported drink brands and the Poseidon café carry a supplement, and we confirm the exact dining package with your quote.

Pool life at Hilton Hurghada Plaza

Two main pools share the work. The showpiece is the terrace pool by the main building, home to the swim up Bluefin bar and a deck that looks straight out over the bay; this is where the gentle daytime activity happens, and where a cocktail arrives without you leaving the water. The second pool, served by the Delphine bar, is the quieter of the two, and guests after a full day on a lounger with a book tend to settle there.

Both main pools are heated through the winter months, and customers travelling in January and February consistently tell us the water stays comfortable even on breezy days. A separate shallow pool is set aside for children. Towels are provided, and loungers and parasols are free on the pool decks and the beach, with enough of them that the dawn towel race never really develops. Snacks from the pool bars keep lunch optional rather than compulsory.

The private bay

The beach is a sheltered, sandy cove at the foot of the resort, framed by the private marina and pier, with a small lagoon giving calm, shallow swimming that suits less confident swimmers. You reach it by steps or by the glass lift, which customers with limited mobility tell us makes all the difference. Loungers, parasols and towels are laid out on the sand, the Sands beach bar keeps drinks within reach, and Turkuaz grills lunch a few steps away.

Snorkelling and diving from Hilton Hurghada Plaza

We will be straight with you: there is no house reef here, and the swimming area is a lagoon rather than a coral garden, so serious snorkelling happens by boat. The good news is that the boats leave from the hotel’s own marina, and the reefs around Giftun Island, some of the best day trip snorkelling on this coast, are a comfortable morning’s outing. A PADI accredited dive centre operates at the resort for everything from try dives to full courses, and water sports run from the beach for a local charge. We can arrange snorkelling trips, dive packages and boat charters with your booking.

Planet Spa

The resort’s spa, Planet Spa, looks out over the water and covers the full menu: hot stone and herbal massages, facials and beauty treatments, plus a sauna, steam bath and hot tub for the slow afternoons. Treatments and the thermal facilities are payable locally, and therapists will happily build a couples’ session if you ask. It is a genuinely quiet corner of the resort, and in winter the steam room after a sea swim is a small pleasure worth planning around.

Gym, courts and keeping active

A well equipped fitness centre is free for guests. Beyond it the sports list is longer than most Hurghada hotels manage: tennis and padel courts, squash, billiards, table tennis and beach volleyball on the sand, with a modest local charge for some facilities and equipment. Between the courts, the heated pools and the sea, staying active here takes no effort at all; the harder job is choosing the sauna instead.

The resort stands on the coast road at the northern edge of El Dahar, Hurghada’s old town. This is the characterful end of the city: the souk, the spice stalls, the coffee houses and the working harbour are all a few minutes away, and in our view that makes the Plaza the best placed five star in Hurghada for anyone who wants a genuine sense of Egypt with their beach holiday. A stroll along the corniche is the natural evening leg stretch; for everything else, taxis are plentiful and inexpensive.
