Water is the landscaping at Pickalbatros Dana Beach Resort: five outdoor pools sit among the palms, from a lagoon-style centrepiece that winds through the grounds to quieter basins tucked into the gardens. Three of the five are heated in the winter months, which keeps a proper swim on the menu even in January.

Character varies by pool. The main lagoon pool is the lively one, close to the bars and the daytime action; walk a little deeper into the gardens and you will find calmer water and emptier loungers, while the Jacuzzi Pool Bar keeps refreshments within reach of your sunbed. The heating matters more than brochures usually admit. The on-site dive centre runs try dives and courses straight off the beach, and we can arrange full-day snorkelling and diving trips to the offshore islands with licensed local operators. Steady winds also make this stretch a happy hunting ground for windsurfers, with equipment and tuition available at the beach, and pedal boats and camel rides along the shore fill the gentler afternoons.

The wellness centre at Dana Beach Resort covers around 200 square metres, with a sauna, Turkish bath and jacuzzi alongside a menu of massages and treatments, payable locally and best booked in your first day or two. A beauty salon takes care of holiday grooming.

For the energetic, there is a well-equipped gym, tennis and padel courts, beach volleyball on the sand, table tennis, minigolf, billiards and a multi-purpose sports pitch, with the dive and windsurf centre down on the beach when you want the sea itself to be the workout.

Our view: this is not a destination spa, it is a well-run supporting act to a beach holiday. For a dedicated spa break we would point you towards other Red Sea properties we sell, but for a deep massage after a dive day, or a Turkish bath on the one cloudy afternoon of the fortnight, it does the job nicely.

The resort sits in Hurghada’s southern hotel zone, the purpose-built stretch of coast where the city’s biggest beachfront properties line up along the Red Sea. It is a location built for convenience: Hurghada International Airport is about 15 minutes by road, and the neighbourhood malls are close enough for an evening stroll or a five-minute taxi.

The southern zone itself is resort country rather than old Egypt: expect landscaped frontages, mall cafés and taxi ranks rather than backstreet bustle, which is exactly what most beach-first customers want after a day in the sun.

Hurghada proper makes an easy half-day out, with the marina’s waterfront restaurants and the old souk quarter of El Dahar for haggling practice, and Luxor with the Valley of the Kings is possible as a long day trip, which we arrange with a guide and driver.
